Front-of-House Emergency Procedures
POWER BLACKOUT
- The House Manager* is responsible for the safe and orderly evacuation of the audience.
- The Stage Manager is responsible for the evacuation of the cast and crew, as well as ensuring the building has been vacated and the premises secured.
- In the event of a power blackout, the House Manager shall confer with the Stage Manager and then announce to the audience that there has been a power failure and that the performance will be suspended for 10 minutes. If the power has not returned by then, the performance is cancelled and the Playhouse must be evacuated immediately. (We have back-up for approximately 30 minutes.) The audience is told to contact the Box Office concerning refunds or replacement tickets.
- The House Manager shall distribute flashlights to the Front of House staff.
- If power is not restored after 10 minutes, all auditorium and exit doors shall be opened and secured open. Ushers will direct patrons to the nearest exits.
- The cloakroom shall be staffed. Flashlights will be needed in the cloakroom
- The House Manager shall ensure that no one remains in the auditorium or washrooms.
- The House Manager shall inform the Stage Manager when the auditorium and foyer are clear and that all patrons have exited safely.
FIRE
- If the fire alarm sounds, evacuate the auditorium and foyer IMMEDIATELY following procedures outlined in "Power Blackout". The Alarm company will summon the fire department.
- The House Manager shall inform the Stage Manager when the auditorium and foyer have been cleared.
MEDICAL EMERGENCY
- Inform the House Manager who will assess the emergency. If first aid is required for a minor injury, a trained individual should be summoned and the patron made comfortable. A First Aid kit is available in the cloakroom.
- If it appears to be a serious injury or illness the House Manager will call 911 immediately and follow instructions.

* For a Kanata Theatre production, the House Manager is a
designated Kanata
Theatre volunteer.
For a rental, the House Manager may be designated by the renter with the specific approval of Kanata Theatre. In either case, the designated individual must accept the responsibilities outlined above.
